Beauty Review: 'They're Real' Benefit Mascara

Saturday, 29 June 2013

Hi guys!

First off let me apologise for delaying a new post for so long - it's been yet another busy week but I will admit to having my lazy moments and not spending as much time on my blog as I should have, so that I will own up to! I will get back to all of you soon, respond to your comments and make a visit to your blogs :-) thanks for being patient with me!

Today's post is going to be a product review for the wildly popular mascara of the moment, Benefit's 'They're Real' Mascara!

I actually got this mascara free with an issue of Elle magazine about a month or so ago, which I was ecstatic about since I'd been wanting to try it for a while, but didn't fancy paying the full amount of £20 without even knowing whether it'd be any good or not.

It's only a small tube, but really worth it considering I paid only £4 for the magazine, and the small tubes of mascara costing about £10 in most cosmetic stores!

I loved the packaging of this mascara - the black and orange colours are so eye-catching and dramatic, you can tell this is the kind of result you're going to get from using the product!

As soon as I opened the box I was immediately impressed with the size of the brush. I'm surprised they even managed to fit it into that tiny tube, but the brush is nice and big, perfect for dramatic lashes. I also noticed the end of the spoolie, where they have extra bristles pointing vertically to extend the very tops of your lashes even more. I actually used to do this anyway with my old mascaras, but since they now have a particular feature for this step, it makes application even more effective!

Here are the results:

I have to admit, whilst the results are considerably impressive, I did have a tricky time actually applying the stuff. Because of the brush's big size, I found it slightly difficult to avoid clumpiness, and did end up with quite a bit of a mess on my eyelids, as you can see! (Not exactly flattering close-ups, I know, but I figured you all ought to see the honest outcome!)

I read a review on this product prior to writing this and noticed that some people find that it doesn't go clumpy - but I'd say this is actually the biggest downside to the product. Whilst, yes, it extends my lashes tremendously as well as adding thickness, I found it did have the tendency to make my lashes too clumpy, and  therefore wasn't that impressed.

Another thing that slightly disappointed me was that I didn't notice any tremoundous difference to what I would normally achieve with my own lashes - previously, I had a mascara routine that consisted of three (yes, three!) different mascaras, just for all different uses. One was to simply darken (Great Lash) the next to lengthen (Rimmel London Lash Accelerator) and lastly, to thicken and add volume (Rimmel London ScandalEyes). These are all fairly affordable brands in comparison to 'They're Real', and I actually got a less clumpy result with my previous routine!

You could argue that having one mascara like this one to do the job instead of three would be a much better deal, and you'd be getting what you paid for, but for me, my old lash routine worked perfectly fine and I would stick by that one, rather than using this one on it's own. There's just something about this product that makes it also very easy to end up with spidery looking lashes, which I'm not too much of a fan of!

However, once I reverted back to my old lash routine again, I decided one day to go a step further - and add They're Real as a finishing touch. Thinking this would likely wreck my lashes, it actually did something wonderful. It extended my lashes even longer (bearing in mind I didn't go crazy with it) and gave me the kind of dramatic false eyelashes look I was hoping for.

And now, when I compare my old lash routine without the Benefit mascara, to my eyelashes when I've done the lash routine PLUS added the fourth step of the Benefit mascara, the results are considerably different! It was from this discovery that I found They're Real does work wonders after all. In fact, I get compliments on them all the time, and I've had people say they look just like false lashes.

Still, even without all the other mascaras, I can't complain too much about it. Even on it's own it does a good job, and could just be me being fussy. I don't know if I'll ever pay the full amount for a bigger tube, as I just find paying that much for a mascara is slightly ridiculous, I would consider paying for the little one again.

It does make a difference, and I'm sure I'll miss it once it runs out!

  • Dramatic length and volume
  • Noticeable difference compared to other mascara's
  • Long-lasting results
  • Deep black colour
  • Works perfectly to thicken long lashes, or extend thick lashes
  • Pricey :-(
  • A bit tricky to apply
  • Messy!
  • Can become clumpy if not applied carefully

So there we have it! They're Real Benefit Mascara. All in all a fantastic product, even if slightly overpriced - I still would recommend!

What do you guys think of this mascara? Did you get a similar result to me? Let me know in the comments!

Hope you all found this review helpful - have a wonderful weekend :-)
